Raindrops keep falling on my head … but not my shoes.
Have your brand new shoes ever met a surprise rain shower? If you’re like most of us, you know that when our footwear competes with Mother Nature, our shoes never win.
This was the situation that Daniela King, a graphic designer from Miami, Florida, found herself in one day as she was leaving work to pick up her kids. Sporting nice new shoes and only a small umbrella to protect herself from the elements, she was dismayed to discover that the parking lot was flooded.
Unwilling to ruin her new footwear, Daniela ran back into the office. After finding some empty plastic grocery bags in the break room, she figured she’d give them a try – covering up her high heels and creating makeshift shoe protectors.
After she made a run for her car, Daniela discovered – much to her delight – that one of these plastic bags had successfully protected one of her shoes. Unfortunately – much to her dismay – the other bag ripped, ruining the other shoe.
“There has to be a better solution,” she thought to herself. After a sleepless night, an idea came to her: She would create a shoe cover that looked great while protecting shoes from the elements. In order for it to be practical, you’d need to be able to throw it into the washing-machine for cleaning, and into your purse for safekeeping. The idea for Seal Shoe Covers was born.
“No one walks around holding an open umbrella all day in case it rains,” says Daniela. “Seal shoe covers are there when you need them — i.e., when it’s raining or snowing — and then they tuck neatly away again.”
Daniela originally took her idea to Kickstarter. Now she’s hoping to take her young company to the next level.
She and several other lucky entrepreneurs will be featured on MSNBC’s Your Business with host JJ Ramberg. In the coming weeks they will pitch their product to HSN judges for the chance to be selected to sell live on HSN and showcase their business to the more than 91 million homes reached via multiple networks and platforms.
Daniela will try to convince the judges that Seal is about more than safeguarding your sandals or even shielding your expensive shoes; it’s about making a fashion statement.
