From the lemonade stand market to the beauty market, two best childhood friends enjoy the sweet smell of success with their all natural PiperWai deodorant.
“Turns out I wasn’t the only one with a deodorant graveyard in my bathroom!”
When Jess Edelstein decided she was done with harsh chemicals and unnatural ingredients found in beauty and cleaning in deodorants that irritated her sensitive skin, she resolved to find a better way to stay fresh and odor free. Looking for answers, she found them in her own kitchen. She got to work mixing activated charcoal, essential oils, and natural moisturizers in a blender and before she knew it she had developed her own formula for natural antiperspirant.
Her best friend and fellow healthy living natural product lover Sarah Ribner decided to give it a try on a muggy volunteer trip to South America shortly thereafter, and the PiperWai tribe was born. The hot and humid weather was no match for Jess’s concoction and by the end of the trip Sarah was a firm believer and had shared with all of the other volunteers on her trip.
After having lemonade stands together as kids, the two old friends joined forces again to bring PiperWai to consumers everywhere, so that anyone seeking an all natural, gentler alternative to their daily essentials could finally have it. An appearance on Shark Tank left them with a hit on their hands, and sales were exploding with a four-month backlog.
Containing no aluminum, parabens or synthetic fragrances, PiperWai is the first gender neutral cream deodorant to use activated charcoal, which is great at neutralizing odor and absorbing moisture. The baking soda content is at the threshold of effectiveness without causing irritation on sensitive skin, giving even clinical strength antiperspirant a run for its money – and to top it off, PiperWai rubs in clear and won’t stain clothes.
“The most amazing feeling is when our customers say that a concoction I used to handcraft with my best friend has changed their lives,” Sarah said. “Our product has made a positive impact on so many people and improving the daily lives of others is not something we take lightly.”
Before they made it big, Jess and Sarah were handcrafting PiperWai mixing and filling jars in a community kitchen in Philadelphia in the wee hours of the night to save on space rental fees. They could make 300 jars at a time and labeled them in a closet in Ribner’s apartment. Today, the product is made at a cosmetics manufacturing facility a hundred thousand jars at a time and orders are shipped every day from a fulfillment center that isn’t their dining room table.
